Patrol Division
In 2013, UCLA PD responded to approximately 75,000 calls for service. Patrol officers are the first responders to our community’s request for service including those at both on and off campus locations.
Patrol Function
The primary function of police officers assigned to patrol is to:
- Provide a uniformed response to calls for service
- Act as a visible deterrent to crime
- Protect the community
- Provide traffic enforcement
- Educate and provide the foundation of resources for other programs to the community
UCLA PD Utilizes:
- Marked patrol cars
- Police motorcycles
- Police bicycles
- Foot patrols
- SUV that has the ability to serve as a mobile Command Post (CP)
Patrol Areas Include:
- Main UCLA campus
- Medical centers (UCLA campus & Santa Monica)
- On-campus residential communities & adjacent communities
- University apartment housing
- Westwood Village
- Fraternity & sorority rows
Lead Officers:
From the ranks of patrol, officers are selected for several Lead Officer positions to serve several communities within UCLA. We have Lead Officers assigned to primarily patrol responsibilities in the following areas:
- Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (RRMC) and UCLA Center for Health Sciences (CHS)
- University Apartments North & On-Campus Housing (UAN)
- University Apartments South (UAS)
- Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center & Orthopedic Hospital (SMMC)
Community Oriented Policing (COP)
UCLA PD embraces the philosphy of Community Oriented Policing. Community Oriented policing is a philosophy that guides police management style and operational strategies. It emphasizes establishment of police-community partnerships and a problem solving approach that is responsive to the needs of the community.
One of the major objectives of community policing efforts is to establish an active partnership between the police and the community that can analyze problems and design and help implement solutions and services that are truly community based. This requires the police to make a conscious effort to createan atmosphere in which community partners actively and willingly co-operate with the police.
Characteristics of Community Oriented Policing are:

Patrol Division officers participate in community outreach programs and presentations, including:
- Mentorship program with student-athletes
- Crime prevention/safety presentations
Mutual Aid
UCLA PD has entered into agreements with the California Highway Patrol, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Santa Monica Police Department in order to provide mutual aid assistance.
The UCLA Police Department is also a member of the Los Angeles County Mutual Aid Organization. We are part of the Area ‘A’ Platoon which includes the police departments of Santa Monica, Beverly Hills & Culver City.
