Psychological and Medical Examinations

Applicants will be evaluated for their suitability for employment as a Police Officer and found to be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. Offer of employment contingent upon completion of satisfactory pre-employment psychological and physical suitability examinations.

The medical and psychological examinations must be conducted by licensed professionals. These and other POST requirements are described in POST Commission Regulations 1954 and 1955 (PDF).

The medical will begin by having you complete a medical history statement. This form will ask questions regarding your medical history. As with the background investigation, completeness and accuracy is critical.

POST provides agencies detailed guidance in the conduct of the medical examination. That guidance is contained in the POST Medical Screening Manual for California Law Enforcement. Although this manual is designed primarily for screening physicians, you may find it contains some useful information related to medical suitability.

Please see the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) site for additional information on the selection process for Police Officers at www.post.ca.gov/peace-officer-selection-process.aspx.
